Three Signs You Should Get a Bike Fit

Many people who are newer to the cycling world believe that being uncomfortable on the bike is a “rite of passage.” I am here to tell you that that is far from the truth. The goal of a bicycle is to get out, feel the wind against your face, the speed that a bike can bring, explore new places, and most of all, have fun! Having fun is difficult if you are uncomfortable, and any of the following three unnecessary discomforts are a great sign that you likely need a bike fit!

Saddle Discomfort—The range of saddle pain for athletes is staggering! Whether you are struggling with general pressure discomfort, saddle sores, genital numbness, or edema, it is important to realize that continuing with some of these more extreme problems can lead to potentially long-term, damaging effects.

Hand/Foot Numbness- Even if you have never experienced it, you have seen your friends shaking their hands, trying to get blood flow to return, relieve pressure from the nerves, and regain feeling in their hands. Numbness in the hands and feet are often a sign that nerves are being pinched in some fashion. We find that positional changes can resolve this, but sometimes, a new handlebar or stem or a properly fitting pair of cycling shoes is necessary.

Joint Pain—Whether directly related to the joint or more directly related to the tendons and ligaments around the joint, a low-impact activity such as cycling should not create pain. However, due to cycling’s highly repetitive movement, it is possible to develop some forms of overuse injuries. If you are experiencing this and have not recently had significant increases in volume or intensity*, improper positioning is likely the cause, forcing the joints to move through improper ranges and causing undue stress on tendons and ligaments.

Cycling should be an enjoyable and exhilarating experience, not a test of endurance marred by unnecessary discomfort. Saddle pain, hand and foot numbness, and joint pain are not badges of honor to be earned but clear indicators that your bike may not be properly fitted to your body. Ignoring these issues can lead to long-term damage and detract from the true essence of cycling—freedom, exploration, and fun. A professional bike fit can address these problems by optimizing your position, alleviating pressure on nerves and joints, and ensuring your equipment complements your unique physique. Don’t let discomfort define your ride; take control, get fitted, and rediscover the joy of cycling as it was meant to be.

* If you have had significant increases in cycling volume and intensity and are experiencing pain, it would be important to readdress the amount you are cycling and allow the property time for recovery.
